Cheapest Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras

I purchased this lens about 8 months ago as my first “L” glass – since then I have added the 24-70 f2.8 Canon (without IS) to complete the range 24-200 mm at f2.8. I really can’t say enough good things about this lens, though in retrospect I might have bought the 24-70 first as it is a bit more versatile. The build quality is terrific and the IS is VERY helpful especially at the longer focal lengths. The f2.8 also allows you to get a teleconverter to double it to 400 mm (though I don’t have that as of yet). Though I’m sure the f4.0 is a great lens, the extra stops on this lens allows you to take existing light pictures in amazingly dim conditions. One of my primary uses for this lens will be school programs as it will allow pictures without flash in many of those conditions (especially after a body upgrade to push the ISO a bit – but that’s another story).

Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT Review

I already tried some POIs. They were not in there as often as I’d like so I agree. But, via the SD card you can load POIs so I’ll give it a pass. If it’s something I need I’ll load it. If not, oh well. I can always look up the address. I did take the time to load some POIs just to see how this worked. I now have every Hooters in the US on my GPS. Sorta overkill as I really don’t like chicken wings that much but considering how easy it was to add thousands of esoteric POI waypoints, I think it would be hard to knock what they have built in.
So far, this unit has been pretty much everything I wanted. I pulled out and replaced a Clarion 675 VXD with this Pioneer. It’s so much better than the Clarion it’s hard to imagine. Everything works as it’s supposed to on the Pioneer. Not so on the Clarion. And Pioneer is using Parrott’s bluetooth technology. I love Parrott.

Cheapest Nikon 200-400mm f/4G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras

I’ve used this lens since 2007, on three different bodies: the D200, D300, and now the top-of-the-line 24-megapixel beast of the D3x. Even on the D3x, this lens provides more resolution than what the camera can deliver. Don’t try this lens if you can’t buy it… it’s absolutely addictive. The one thing to keep in mind if you’re moving into the “big guns” is that 7 pounds does not sound like much, until you’re holding it up with your left hand for a few hours, a foot away from your face, and trying to hold it steady. Even with VR, long lenses do take some practice, some strength, and some technique; so get lots of practice, and don’t expect to be able to get the very best possible quality from this (or any comparable) lens in your first few days or weeks with it.

Nikon Super CoolScan 9000 ED Film Scanner

I was astonished at what this scanner could do, in terms of preserving the gentle tones of my black and white negatives. My only regret is that there is no equivalent to Digital ICE for black and white. That problem is not unique to this scanner, of course.

The quality of the images I get from this scanner, with 6cm x 6cm negatives from a 1970-vintage twin lens camera, trounces the images I get with a Canon 5D SLR. I also have used it with 35MM negatives and Kodachrome slides, which work beautifully, and with both 4.5cm x 4.5cm negatives and 110 negatives, which require that I jury-rig a special mask for the glass-covered medium format carriage (FH-869GR, not included).

Cheapest Nikon SB-600 Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras

This flash could easily be perfect. It’s well built with a metal shoe. It has a honest guide number of about 100 (ft). It zooms up to 85 mm. It works great in TTL mode, on camera or off camera as part of Nikon’s CLS, or as a manual flash triggered via the shoe (a PC would make it even nicer). Battery life and recycling times are good. To bounce backward you have to tilt your head a bit, because it’s so small, but you can make it work.

To me this desing flaw is a real deal breaker. I am wondering, if the engineers at Nikon just never talk to photographers. Looking at the little booklet with sample pictures that came with the flash, this option seems very likely :)
But on the other hand this little mistake could also have been a smart marketing move. If you need a modern, versatile on-camera flash, you have to go with the top of the line model. Not because you need all the other features of the SB-900, but because of the silly swivel issue. Very disappointing.

Cheapest Audio Unlimited SPK-VELO-001 Water-Resistant Wireless Speakers with Remote

Speakers worked flawlessly out of the box. No setup or tuning to channels. Plugged the transmitter into my PC and the speakers started to receive sound immediately. I especially appreciate that the speakers turn themselves into a Mute mode when no audio is being transmitted. A previous pair from a different manufacturer created loud white noise when no audio was being transmitted. There are also no dropouts in the audio reception. Overall a great buy. The speakers are excellent for bringing sound closer and I have had no reception problems.
